BIO

Los Angeles-based/Milwaukee-bred power pop rockers BIG MOTHER GIG released their 2018 LP No More Questions while on a West Coast mini-tour with Gin Blossoms. The band had returned in 2016 after a 20+ year hiatus. For the LP, they recruited Dicky Barrett (Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and Britta Phillips (Luna) for guest vocals and had the opportunity to co-write with acclaimed novelist, Rick Moody (The Ice Storm).

Their LP and singles were praised by BROOKLYN VEGANNPR/THE CURRENTPASTETHE BIG TAKEOVERALTERNATIVE PRESSUNDER THE RADAR, NO DEPRESSION, SUBSTREAMNEW NOISE, ALLTHINGSGO and more. 3 singles charted on Alt-Specialty radio’s FMQB Submodern Chart with support from Sirius/XM, NPR/The Current and more. The band soared to over 1.2M streams and launched a web-series on NEW NOISE MAGAZINE. The video for “Obliterate” stars Michael Ornstein (Sons Of Anarchy, Mayans) and they joined Luna and Soccer Mommy for Midwestern and West Coast dates.

BIG MOTHER GIG originally formed in 1992 in Milwaukee and played with The Magnolias, Bender, Alligator Gun, PunchDrunk (who later formed The Hold Steady) and more. At their final show in 1996, they were praised by Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner but broke up when singer Richard Jankovich moved to New York. Throughout the ‘00s, Jankovich achieved success with Burnside Project (who’s “Cue The Pulse To Begin” was the theme to “Queer As Folk”) and Pocket (who’s remixes for Radiohead and Beck were praised by Pitchfork, Stereogum, etc.)

Since reforming, BIG MOTHER GIG has played with Gin Blossoms, Luna, Soccer Mommy, Peelander-Z , Alvarez Kings, The Yawpers and more. New members include Mike Datz, Albert Kurniawan and Micah Lopez.

PRESS

“…the kind of melodic punk ripper that’s perfect for Dicky’s trademark rasp…”
BROOKLYNVEGAN

“…with a really aggressive, heart and soul Midwestern, Husker-Du kind of sound…”
THE CURRENT/NPR

“…hits hard from the jump with infectious harmonized guitar leads cutting through a wall of fuzz into a wave of a chorus sure to find its way into your head for the next couple of weeks. “
PASTE

“Top 10 best songs of December, 2018”
THE BIG TAKEOVER

“their first single in 20 years, “Alvarado.” It’s a blend of punk, indie and alternative”
ALTERNATIVE PRESS

“The results are unexpected …the hypnotic, “krautrockish” (Peaking Lights) remix…provides a nice wormhole into an alternate space for a while.
UNDER THE RADAR

“Opening with rip-roaring vocals and an anthemic riff that is bound to inspire head banging…”
NO DEPRESSION

“Well-thought-out, highly educated lyrics…have our ears begging for more.”
IMPOSE

“Big Mother Gig take the established melodies and add to them with a cacophony of vocals that stick like an ear worm, it’s damned catchy. “
NEW NOISE

“…fits into the current landscape with a sound that could have been plucked right out of ’96…Picture (them) on with Jawbreaker and the Promise Ring and you’ve got the right idea.”
SUBSTREAM

“Wall of riffs and smooth pop center, is an exciting reminder of just how hard the ’90s rocked”
JOURNAL SENTINEL

“This cathartic, grunge-laden single is a testament to years of cultural contribution and a fresh reminder that time is never a factor for rock and roll. .”
